its only words

i went to website once where you had to list your favourite 20 words.  i had a go but i couldn’t get to 20.  they don’t have to be words that describe you.  just words that you like the sound of or have nice associations or bring back special memories.  anyway here is my small list.

gold – it can be warm and smooth.  better than diamonds which I think are hard sharp and cold.

felixstowe – very special memories.  and such a quaint name.

darjeeling – I know its a sort of tea or a place in india or somewhere but I just love to say the word.

silk – a word that sounds like it feels.  the slippery shiny silky silkiness of silk next to your skin.  a lovely feeling.

abracadabra - its just magic.

ozymandias – he was a king or something in a poem we had to learn at school.  imagine giving the name to your kid and calling him ozzy for short.

leather – the smell and the feel of it.

haberdashery – the sort of shop my grandmother would go to.  but where on earth did the word come from.  they dont sell habers or dasherys.  its a mystery.

perhaps the list reveals something about me.  i am a touchy feely sort of person.  but its only a list of words.  what do you think.  what are your favourite words.

  3. 3 mercy

hey shad. dave has a good one. he says his ghast is flabbered.

  4. 4 Dr. Fell

Vivavoce, I see, like me, you are a fan of Arabian Nights.

It was a mystical night and as the mercurial moon reached its xenith it hung like ammonite on a purple sea. The loquacious Bedouin, wrapped in the vaporous perfume of amaranthus and the scent of kashmir, approached the nymph like an iguana, to whisper into her ear. “I have come to take you from the jurisprudence of the priory to a place from whence, perchance, you shall not return. The price is but one kruger rand.” The quinessential smile on the face of the nymph belied the taste of cyanide within as the judgment nisi became absolute.

  5. 5 vivavoce

I’ve actually never read Arabian Nights, the above paragraph isn’t really from it? either way it’s very beautiful.

  6. 6 coolbunny

My favourite word is awesome? You know why? It’s just totaly awesome!!! I also like cool … but it’s like a bad habit - keeps following the bunny around.

  7. 7 winnierose

mmmmmm Dr fell, eloquent indeed, What a wordsmith. You almost made me believe that amaranthus had a perfume. And said so beautifully in your dulcet tones.

Mercy…..love this post ( and I love to hear Daves input now and then, Me thinks he is a tad dry in wit) What an excercise for my work addled brain, Here I was trying to unwind after a long day, and I love everyones words so far. Readings vivavoce’s words, I realised they evoke, memories, visions, senses etc. I can but try……….

infinity………grains of sand on the beach.
serendiptity……….finding something beautiful when you least expect it.
Lisianthus………….a beautiful double flower, looking all the world like a rose.
    dragonfly………whimsical
    pre-raphaelite ………wonderful wonderful art work
conjecture……………one eyed voters Not that I read those posts !
    Philosophical………….winnierose
anthropomorphism……..what the shadowmaster is against. A dog, is a dog !
    metamorphosis……….the lovely lady chaos.
whimsical………..how I like to view life.

sustenance…….coffee after excercing the brain. Mercy and viv, you get elephant stamps for coming up with 20 !!!

  8. 8 Dr. Fell

Naturally winnierose, I prefer the alternative name for amaranthus. No, not pigweed but the far more evocative Love-lies-bleeding.

By the way, much as I would like to conduct a similar exercise on your list I fear it is beyond even my capabilities. Nice choice of words.

  9. 9 Lady Chaos

    This is a brilliant post!

Theshadow - Heheh…. discombobulated… Does that mean that we’re combobulated the rest of the time?

    Winnierose - :) *flatteredness and smiles*… but… metamorphosis?

    My favourites:
Yeah - just so useful in conversations, especially on MSN to imply that you’re still listening.
Dapper - no one uses dapper anymore… it’s so charming…
Endonuclease - a biology word, pronounced “en-doe-new-clee-ays”. It just sounds so clever and elegant.
Deadicated - for poems about people that aren’t so nice…
Elaborate - as in the adjective, not the verb. Elaborate things are usually cool.
Awesome - I had to steal this one from Coolbunny… I too am guilty of using it way out of context many times throughout the day.
Paradigm - knowing this word is like getting a tattoo that says “I’ve been to uni”.
Tsarevna - I think it means princess in Russian mythology. Such a pretty word.
Venison - I just like the sound of it.
Fly - this one gets a world of use in my poems.
Maniacal - oooh, I get all tingly just thinking about this word.
Confuzzled - this one just hits the nail on the head… it sounds like confuzzlement feels.
Salad - for some reason, the word “salad” is funny. Cracked me up right in the middle of a psych lecture on schizophrenia… XD

And I have to say I’m rather fond of the names of the chemical elements, e.g. Beryllium, Rubidium, Strontium, Meitnerium, etc.

Might I hazard a guess at Dr Fell’s favourite word? Is it “naturally”? :)

  10. 10 Dr. Fell

My apologies mercy, vivavoce’s words had a theme. Try as I might I am unable to find a thread through these words. So as an afterthought, I have tried to put a verse around most of them. I hope you like it.

    Night falls in Mother England
And lamps are lit in Felixstowe
The door of the haberdashery is closed
On satin and silk, ribbon and bow.

In her bedroom over the corner shop
    Sipping a cup of Darjeeling
A grandmother sits in her rocking chair
    With an old familiar feeling.

She looks upon the setting sun,
    Orange and red and gold
    And stamps her feet in her leather boots;
    The nights are getting cold.

She dreams of Matilda, gone fifteen years
    Far away across the water
And of Mercy, the laughing, fair-haired child
    Her daughter’s beautiful daughter.

  11. 11 winnierose

thanks Dr Fell. And indeedy, the plum coloured amaranthus is called love lies bleeding, not sure its applied to the green one though. I’ll share a piece of useless info, but I watched vasilli’s garden and a greek guy, said that you can make jam from amaranthus. That we aussies, dont put it to its full potential……..go figure.

  12. 12 Dr. Fell

    These are my favourite words:
poignant, coypu, yes, undaunted, caress, egg, deer, sympathy, beer, retribution, arewethereyet, hospitality, home, lick, pullover, france, harmless, station, watford, intention.
Since they are my favourites no further explanation is required or indeed offered. My friends, or otherwise, may make of these what they will. To me, naturally, it is a matter of complete indifference.

  13. 13 mercy

dr fell i hope your bedside manner is better than this, you made me cry. my words and my memories are quite different but somehow you made it feel as if it really was me. i dont know what to say.

  14. 14 vivavoce

It was a poignant moment as the train pulled into the Watford station, I had not had any intention of returning home. As I stare from the carriage window, subconsiously I caress the pullover I that I am wearing, the pullover she knitted and my mind strays backs to France.

I had been in South America studying Coypu, when I recieved a request to be best man at my mate’s wedding in Paris. I said yes and feeling like a break from my field work looked foward to the visit and the hospitality of his family.

Thats were I met her, and my life began, until then I had not realised that I had not been living, but it was not to last. We were travelling to the alps, she was dozing, I slowed to round a bend, she stirred “arewethereyet” she murmured, then the deer ran into the road. When I came to, I found her thrown from the car , her body shattered like egg shell crushed underfoot. How could such a harmless animal destroy my life. I wanted retribution.

Undaunted by my family and friends offers of support, I chose to lick my wounds, drowning them in a haze of beer, I didn’t want their sympathy. Till I realised she would of hated that, I pulled myself together and started the long road to recovery by going home.

  15. 15 Dr. Fell

Excellent ! Seems there is life in nook after all, although there are probably some sideways glances being cast.

  16. 16 theshadow

One day nooksters, shadowmaster will join in, in this play of words. That that will be the end of his solemn vow, will not, not be held against him.

However, i got this malady? out of my system in my first year of study, and decided to use plain english, and, with respect, not let word play get in the way of a good story.

    cheerio’
    shadowmaster
