Hey there Nurse Mercy, Yep it was strangely summery today, I did enjoy it.

I was just admiring your latest avatar.
My grandfather invented the disposable nurses hat that you are wearing.

Nurse Mercy, Thank god for the sunshine.!!!! I’m feeling like there is a life out there after all. Even the plants are tipping there faces up to the sun and breathing deeply.

Golden……That is an amazing fact. What a clever and inovative G/F.

    She wore her yellow sun-bonnet,
    She wore her greenest gown;
She turned to the south wind
    And curtsied up and down.
    She turned to the sunlight
    And shook her yellow head,
    And whispered to her neighbour:
    “Winter is dead.”

Yes Winnierose I believe the old GF was a very clever man - unfortunately I never met him due to a family history (for history read “scandal”) in which he left my grandmother for - you guessed it - his nurse!
    PS
We never saw any of the reputed fortune he made from his invention either! Oh well Hey Ho!

    pps
Thanks for that Viva - A.A. Milne is one of my favorite poets/writers

Where am I going? I don’t quite know.
What does it matter where people go?
Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow -
    Anywhere, anywhere. I don’t know.

Arrrgh!! *Sizzle* Not the sun!! *Crackle*

    Here’s my sun poem…

Sizzle and crackle, that’s the sound
Heard every day the sun’s around
It’s evil, I know it has no soul
Nor heart, only an ozone hole
The sun’s not one to compromise
On lasting damage to our eyes
Happy is how the sun will feel
When it sees our skin begins to peel
    Melanomas make it laugh
    It calls them it’s autograph
It scorches plants, it fades our clothes
So you’d better keep your blinds closed
Or that yellow demon in the sky
Will bid your health a swift goodbye.

Seriously though, it’s nice to have a summery day in the middle of winter… as long as my good friend SPF 30 High Protection Against UVA And UVB keeps my face company.

It had to happen. Sun must have a hat. What happened to common sense Lady Chaos.

We have a choice to avoid sun and die from 16 internal cancers, or age gracefully with wrinkles into an old age! I know what my choice is - wrinkles into old age. Because Sun is life giving and moderation or common sense is the key. Have a look at the link below that has this quote:

“The original meaning of the acronym SPF was Sun Protection Factor, but Gasparo, et al, recently have recommended that it be changed to Sunburn Protection Factor because there is no evidence to support the concept that an SPF lotion can prevent anything but sunburn. It must be kept in mind that you must apply the recommended amount of lotion–1.25 ounces per adult full-body application–in order to achieve the rated protection level.”

and this quote from a link below that

“Fifteen hundred Americans die every year from skin cancers. Fifteen hundred Americans die every day from the serious cancers.”

and there is more, much more - just google SUN VITAMIN D CANCERS. See what you get.

Interesting direction this topic has taken.
Youngatheart I’m not sure that the figures given are correct - my reading puts the number who die annually of skin cancer in the USA nearer 10 000 and while there are many types of skin cancer with varying degrees of risk and prognosis, exposure to the sun increases the risk for all of them.
Having said that, I am not sure that rubbing a chemical cocktail into my skin daily would necessarily be all that good for me either.
I found the following information in the National Geographic Greenguide product report and have condensed it for the purposes of this post.
Sun screens contain all sorts of ingredients that are considered carcinogenic.
Benzophenone, for instance is implicated in many allergies and skin rashes and perhaps more importantly it has been shown to mimic estrogen in the body, giving it the power to disrupt the endocrine system. In one study “estrogen sensitive breast cancer cells in test tubes multiplied when they were exposed to benzophenone-3″
The parabens, which are preservatives that are widely used in cosmetics from shampoos to sunscreens are also thought to mimic estrogen ( and we wonder why breast cancer is on the rise)
There are a number of other ingredients that people may want to steer clear of - including the synthetic fragrances - generally unlabeled and unregulated - that can aggravate allergies and asthma (and we wonder why asthma and allergies in children are have hit epidemic proportions)
Add to this people who use sunscreen generally feel more protected and therefore increase their exposure to the sun and there has been speculation that sunscreen is responsible for the dramatic spike in skin cancer incidence.
Not only the personal damage should be considered when using sun block. The mining of Zinc is causing widespread environmental damage and the production of titanium dioxide using a chlorine process, produces persistent organic pollutants that work their way through the food chain.

We don’t use sunscreen in our house and have found that the best way to limit skin damage from the sun is to avoid “excessive” exposure. We always wear hats in summer and try not to go out in the fiercely hot part of the day.

Hear, hear. I concur Goldie. Below is another site I have just discovered with the following quote under Skin Cancer Cover-up by Professor Sam Shuster:

“Every summer we’re warned that the sun can kill. In fact, most sun-provoked lesions are benign, and not really cancers at all. A clinical scientist writes.”

My take on this issue is that Sun is a cooker, and just like any other cooker, be careful. But, hey you would not eat all the food raw with all its attendant microbes, bacteria, and viruses and get sick. Would you?

Hehe… aww, you guys got so serious. My poem’s a joke, a bit of an exaggeration, yes there are sun-related health risks, but, depending on how much melanin you have in your skin, a bit of sun’s okay… unless you’re a redhead… I’ve seen the consequences of redheads sun. Not healthy.

theyoungatheart - the main reason I wear sunscreen IS to avoid sunburn. Wrinkles don’t bother me that much (yet), I just like being pale, and not having peely skin since I burn easily. You can get a spray on tan but you can’t get a spray on pale, so there’s no simple option.

Golden1 - I had no idea chemicals in sunscreen mimic estrogen… I have been actively trying to raise my estrogen these last few months with constant eating, soy food, etc, do you think benzophenome and parabens help or hinder that?

I wear sunscreen most days I’m outside simply because if I go in the sun, I become a horrible rainbow of brown, red, orange and yellow (that’s right, orange and yellow). Also, I have very thin skin speckled with dark brown moles, susceptible to cancer.
…And if you couldn’t tell, I like the pale look. I also dislike the feel of the sun on my skin, so I usually avoid it anyway, but that’s impossible on the bus or walking home.

I know about vitamin D and get that from Hypol and any sun that reaches my neck or arms. And of course I have lazy days when I don’t wear sunscreen every so often. AND of course sunscreen isn’t perfect and some sun gets through.

I wear a hat sometimes too, but (*vanity alert*) they look terrible on me (so casual and sporty *shudders*) and the times I need the most sun protection (on the bus) are inside. Not to mention I have a tiny head and windy days blow hats right off. Also, if you wear a hat, you have to bring a backpack (instead of a handbag) to stow it in when you go inside (unless you have a huge handbag).

Environmentally harmful chemical cocktail or not, sunscreen will always be welcome on my face. :)

I’m a shade dweller myself and lament the imminent passing of winter. The smells and sounds of Spring are sweet, so it’s not doom and gloom, but the rain cloud’s dominion has been all-too-brief for my liking.

Hi Lady Chaos, You are a rare creature and I feel for you and your skin. Skin is so useful if only we would make much better use of its abilities. You can infuse vitamins A, B ,C, D, and E via skin into the blood and to every cell easier then through the digestive system. Anti-oxidants, Co-enzyme Q10 and Collagen are also easy to infuse through the skin. Ask a good Beauty Therapist or an Aesthetician to give you a facial and/or a body wrap and not only that you will enjoy the relaxation, but you may find it does your body and your skin the world of good. And you never know you may Look & Feel great. Anyway you women know all that, but hey men can do it too. How about it male Nooksters?

  15. 15 golden1

Hey Lady Chaos - do what you gotta do! You’re the one who has to live your life and I am sure you know best how to go about it. Not sure about the estrogen thing though, you should check with your doctor/ health type person.
